Controversy Erupts as Alleged Rights Abusers Appointed to BGMEA Support Committee

BN Report
Two individuals facing allegations of crimes against humanity, and reportedly close associates of the ousted Awami League, have been included in a support committee formed by the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) to assist the government-appointed administrator in managing the organization’s operations.

The 10-member committee, created on October 24, includes five representatives from the Combined Council (Parishad) and Forum, an alliance within the organization. However, the inclusion of ANM Saifuddin and Miran Ali, accused of involvement in crimes against humanity during incidents in the July uprising, has sparked concern among the public and business community, with many questioning the administrator’s decision.

The committee’s five representatives from the Combined Council include Shahidullah Azim, MD of Classic Fashion Concept; Miran Ali, MD of Misami Garments; Asif Ashraf, MD of Urmi Garments; ANM Saifuddin, MD of MS Wearing Apparels; and Shams Mahmood, MD of Shasha Garments. Each of these members has previously served on the BGMEA Board of Directors.

Miran Ali is under investigation following a case filed against him on September 12, 2024, at Uttara West Police Station, where he is listed as the 14th accused in a case involving alleged violence against students. Additionally, ANM Saifuddin, who reportedly has ties with influential political figures such as Mayor Atiqul Islam, former MP Abdus Salam Murshedi, and Siddiqur Rahman, has faced scrutiny regarding his role within the garment industry. Though listed as the MD of MS Wearing Apparels, reports indicate that the company ceased operations in 2008, with no apparent business activity at its registered address.

BGMEA’s administrator, Md. Anwar Hossain, established the support committee to streamline BGMEA’s operations, conduct fair elections within 120 days, and reform the voter list. However, Saifuddin’s inclusion has raised eyebrows, as some members question his involvement on a committee intended to promote transparency and fairness.

When asked about the situation, Administrator Anwar Hossain stated he was unaware of the allegations against Miran Ali and declined to comment on Saifuddin’s inclusion, directing further inquiries to his office.

Amid mounting concerns, representatives from the garment industry have indicated that if these individuals are not reconsidered for the committee, protests could escalate. Both Miran and Saifuddin were unavailable for comment, with their phones reportedly switched off, leading to speculation about their whereabouts.

This development follows the dissolution of BGMEA’s Board of Directors on October 20 by the Vice Chairman of the Export Development Bureau (EPB). Anwar Hossain took on the role of administrator on October 23 and announced the formation of this committee the following day.
